Crowns Provide Strength and Beautiful Smiles
Do you think you need a crown or has your dental service provider suggested that you get one? Crowns are used for many different reasons. They can help strengthen a tooth or even be used for cosmetic reasons.
Crowns completely cover an existing tooth so your dental provider may suggest a crown when a tooth has suffered extensive decay leaving very little tooth for a filling to be placed, or if you currently have a large filling that cracked or needs replacement. A weak or broken tooth can also be strengthened with the use of a crown.
Because crowns are designed to look and feel like real teeth, they can also be used if a patient has badly discolored or misshaped teeth. Crowns are usually made with ceramic or porcelain materials that can be made to look very natural and match the color of other teeth. Porcelain crowns are fused with a metal base. That is is something to keep in mind if your dentist has told you that your gums are receding because a dark metal edge could appear at the gum line. This is especially important if you are in need of a crown for one of your front teeth.
If it is a front tooth that needs a crown, you could even work with your dentist to do some teeth whitening before selecting the color of your crown. You should talk with your dentist to find out which type of crown is best for you and whether teeth whitening is an option.
Crowns do require two visits with your dentist. During the first visit, your dentist will prepare the tooth for a crown, make sure that all the decay is removed from the tooth and take an impression of the tooth. A temporary crown will be placed on the tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being made. At the second visit with your dentist, the permanent crown will be placed on the tooth, adjusted to fit correctly, and cemented into place.
Crowns are very effective for making a tooth stronger and for improving a tooth’s appearance. A discussion with your dentist about crowns and whether you need one or want one for cosmetic reasons can take place at your next visit.
